    Abstract:

Apoptosis is a highly organized mechanism by which cells undergo programed cell death. Apoptosis participates in many physiological and pathological processes. Recent experimental approaches suggest that sphingolipid metabolites participate in key events of apoptosis. Being a lipid second messenger, sphingomyelin lysis product-ceramide play an important role in inducing and preventing apoptosis.
