The methylation and demethylation of cytosine in CpG dinucleotide plays an important role in regulation of mammalian gene expression.There are two kinds of promoters in mammalian genome:CpG-island promoters and CpG-deficient promoters.Two protein factors influence gene expression by interacting with methylated CpGs.CpG islands also have useful applications in genome analysis.
